Should we be concerned with GMO produced foods?

A widely used herbicide (weedkiller) has been found in a popular breakfast cereal and corn chips. These foods were produced using GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organism). Residues of the herbicide glysophate have been found in these foods after the organisation GMO Free USA had these foods tested in an accredited lab looking for glyphosate residue using the Specific LC/MS/MS testing method with a minimum detectable level of 0.02 ppm.

Sunchips were found to contain 100% GMO corn. According to GMO Free USA “An in-vitro study found that the insecticides in this corn may be toxic to human cells. Feeding studies conducted on mammals found adverse effects including immune system disturbances, blood biochemistry disturbances, male reproductive organ damage, disturbances in the functioning of the digestive system and signs of organ toxicity. Industry claims that these insecticidal proteins are broken down in the digestive tract, yet a study found the proteins circulating in the blood of pregnant and non-pregnant women and the blood supply to fetuses.”

According to the Journal of Poultry Science glysophate residue has been found in animal feed and has also been found in the chicken meat and different organs as spleen, liver, intestine, lung, heart, and kidney of chickens consuming that feed.

Glysophate residues consumed through GMO produced feeds has also been found to have a negative effect on gastrointestinal microbiota in chickens.

Even if you don’t have diverticulitis, you should still read this. Since 3 out of 4 people will develop diverticulosis by age 60 (which can turn into diverticulitis at the drop of a hat), it is more prevalent than you might think.


The dangers of diverticulitis by itself

Diverticulitis (inflamed “pockets” in your intestines) is not something to take lightly. Besides being excruciatingly painful (said to be worse than childbirth or kidney stones), complications of diverticulitis can include:

Rectal bleeding

– An abscess that can harm healthy tissues

Blockages caused by scarring in the small or large intestine. When this occurs, wastes can’t move through your intestines like they should. If an area of the intestines becomes completely blocked, emergency surgery is necessary.

Peritonitiswhen an inflamed “pocket” ruptures, spilling your intestinal contents into the abdomen and causing inflammation of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). Peritonitis can be life-threatening and requires immediate care.  peritonitis

Fistulas – when inflamed tissues stick to other nearby tissues and heal in that position. With diverticulitis, inflamed colon tissue can stick to your bladder, small intestine or skin. In this case, a “bridge” is formed through which bacteria and toxins can travel from your colon to the other organs. When a fistula is formed between the colon and the bladder, for example, it can cause chronic bladder infections (and feces coming out the “pathway” where your urine usually does).

So what are Lectins?

Nutritionist Kylie McCarthy (Australia) provides some interesting information on a protein associated with grains that can have adverse effects on our health – lectins. “Lectins cause chronic inflammatory disorders including neurodegenerative disease, inflammatory bowel disease, infectious and autoimmune diseases and what is often embarrassing, wind. Lectins can dramatically reduce our immunity in a number of ways: through disruption of intestinal flora and destruction of our natural killer cells.  Natural killer cells are one of the body’s most important defences against viruses and other invaders and it’s these natural killer cells that are destroyed with the consumption of lectin-covered grains.” Readers will learn how to counteract the effects of lectins using certain supplements and cooking methods.

Can a Statin Ruin Your Workout?


Statins are widely prescribed drugs for the treatment of cholesterol but there is some controversy surrounding their use.  In her article in Issue 16 of Health Naturally Magazine,  Dr. Emily Kane (USA) explains that “Statins, the most widely prescribed drugs in the world, can cause muscle aches and fatigue in some patients.” This effect is most pronounced in people who exercise, an ironic conundrum when one considers that the people who need to exercise the most are those with high cholesterol. “Move less and you increase your risk of premature death and other undesirable outcomes, even if your cholesterol is under control.”  It seems a matter for further discussion and consideration.

Can Cardiovascular Disease Lead to Dementia?

In this article in Issue 15, Matthew Pase highlights the importance of maintaining good cardiovascular health in order to maintain good brain function.  He writes “looking after your heart, blood vessels and blood pressure may be one means to reduce the risk of both cardiovascular disease and Vascular Cognitive Impairment.”

It seems that if we are to keep thinking clearly, we need to make sure our heart is functioning well. Having mild hypertension over a long period can so the seeds for dementia.

Table Salt – Find an alternative

Salt extraction at La Palma, Canary IslandsI’m not saying don’t consume salt, we need salt, in fact you can’t live without it. What I’m saying is that ordinary table salt and the salt found in processed foods is not good for you. What you really need is natural salt. One damages your health, the other one assists the body to heal.

Like so many foods that are processed from natural foods, the healthiest parts are removed. We seem obsessed in processing certain foods to make them white! Salt that has been processed is 98% sodium chloride the other 2% comes mostly from man made chemicals and sometimes they add back a bit of iodine that was stripped out in the processing. Fancy some ferrocyanyde? How about a pinch of sodium-aluminosilicate or magnesium carbonate?

On the other hand, natural salt is around 85% sodium chloride. What makes up the rest of the natural salt are naturally occurring minerals. It varies according to the source. It contains trace minerals like vanadium, silicon and phosphorous.

So what’s the best choice? Look for some Himalayan salt. It is extremely old and pure, having been matured under immense tectonic pressure. It contains some 84 trace minerals that were found in prehistoric oceans.  Because it has been buried for so long, it does not contain any of the pollutants found in our oceans today.

Now salt is good for you and it is essential, but it must be used in moderation.

Would you ever choose to eat a food created by a chemist? That is exactly what you are doing if you are eating margarine. This food has a long history and has had a few variations over time. The thing is, because it is not natural, when it enters your body, your digestive system does not know how to deal with it. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It creates damage in the attempt.

We have been sold a myth. The myth is that somehow margarine is good for you and your heart. This is definitely not true. One reason for this is that margarine is created by hydrogenating oils. Hydrogenation is when the molecules of the oil have been altered and changing their state from a liquid to a solid.  Hydrogenated oil is also referred to as a trans-fat. Man-made trans-fats contribute to cancer, heart disease, bone problems, skin disease, hormonal imbalance, difficulties in pregnancy, problems with lactation, infertility, low birth weight, learning disabilities and growth problems with children.  Some scientists have done studies on man-made trans-fats and declared that they are unsafe at any level for human consumption.

Canned Tomatoes- Give them the Can!

It does become wearisome to keep alert of all different food items and what is safe and what is not. It has come to my attention that many leading brands of canned foods contain BPA. BPA is a toxic chemical that is found in many different food containers. BPA is associated with organizational changes in the breast, prostate, mammary glands, testis, brain structure and chemistry, body size and behaviour of laboratory animals. There are concerns about diabetes and heart disease as well as several other serious health problems.

What exasperates the problem is that the acidity found in the tomatoes causes the BPA to leach into the food. It is highly advised to eat fresh fruit and vegetables or purchase items in glass containers to avoid this widespread problem especially when the food is acidic. Evidence suggests that it bio-accumulates and therefore pregnant women should be very wary of anything containing BPA.

There have been calls for the FDA to ban the use of BPA’s in food packaging but to date, there are still BPA’s in food packaging.

How sweet it is – or is it

 chalkboard with stevia and aspartame written on itWho said sugar wasn’t addictive? In fact, research shows that the average American drinks more than a gallon of soda (soft drink) a week. That works out to be a staggering 56+ gallons a year. Some of these drinks are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (a whole separate story) while those labelled as “diet” drinks usually contain Aspartame, a more dangerous sweetener. Millions of people consume diet drinks thinking that they are better for their health than those sweetened with a more natural form of sugar, unaware of the possible dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners. In fact, instead of helping you lose weight, ‘zero calorie’ drinks may double your risk of obesity by stimulating your appetite and inhibiting your body’s ability to monitor calorie intake.

Although there are other forms of artificial sweeteners, Aspartame is now the predominant one used in ‘low cal’ food and drinks.  Discovered in a lab in 1965, Aspartame is considered by some to have a questionable history, taking 16 years to be approved by the FDA as a sweetener for human consumption. It is worth noting that studies that were funded by the industry found no adverse side effects from consuming Aspartame, whereas 90% of independent studies came up with a range of negative side-effects.

Most of the side-effects reported are neurological and affect the nervous system. Some people report ‘foggy’ thinking, headaches, hallucinations and mood swings after consuming Aspartame. Other complaints are gastrointestinal. In fact, there have been more reports to the FDA for reactions to Aspartame than for all other food additives combined.

Fats – the good, the bad and the ugly.

There is so much discussion about fats today.  A lot of people are not sure what is good and what is bad.  Some people are sure that ALL fats are bad. This is very wrong! We absolutely need fat – the human brain is said to be composed of up to 60% fat. These fats are known as Essential Fatty Acids.  We want to assist by tying to clear this up for you.

The Good Fats  

As already stated we need fat. There is a good reason why some fats are referred to Essential Fatty Acids or EFA’s, because they are essential to our good health!

The group of fats known as unsaturated fats are thought of as good fats. These include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and are generally liquid when at room temperature. Monounsaturated fats are found in nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil. Polyunsaturated fats can be found in soya beans, oily fish and walnuts. There is evidence that eating foods rich in polyunsaturated fats may improve unhealthy cholesterol levels.

Omega 3 fatty acid is a well-known polyunsaturated fat and is found in both marine and plant foods, such salmon, sardines and linseed (flaxseed).

Omega 3 fats are very beneficial to your cardiovascular system and help to keep every cell in your body supple.
