How will you cope with ageing?

Senior woman with her medicine bottlesWho’s going to look after you when you’re old? Do you have adequate plans in place? With the massive baby boomer generation entering the stage where aged care is becoming an increasing concern, we ask, how well are you prepared?

From our philosophy, the better you prepare for this point in life using natural methods the better the outcome and the least expensive it will be. If you begin taking pharmaceuticals as you age it is most likely that the list will grow as well as the list of side effects.

The bulk of people go to their doctor for answers to their health problems looking for answers. It is the few who look at everyone else and reflect upon their own situation who start seeking answers outside the box.

BE PROACTIVE, in fact the best thing you can start with is BE ACTIVE. Exercise is the one activity you can undertake that is free that will have the greatest effect on your health. Watch your weight, in fact if you heed our first point early enough, the second point is already addressed very closely to this one.

The next MOST IMPORTANT part is; watch what you eat. Start reading labels for fat content and fat type and sugar content. Food labels are extremely deceptive. Low fat has nothing to do with low sugar on a food label. Sugar comes in many forms like glucose and fructose. Often food labelled as low fat is high in sugar. If you do not burn up consumed sugar immediately, it converts to FAT in your body.

Start addressing your health with these two bitter pills – Diet and […]

Fibromyalgia and Smoking – chronic pain makes quitting difficult.

I can't quit!

Did you know that whilst smoking rates have dropped to only 22% in the general public, over 50% of people with chronic pain still smoke? Most people are well aware of all the reasons to quit smoking, but people living with Fibromyalgia find it particularly difficult to quit because of their chronic pain condition. Whilst people living in chronic pain get some immediate comfort from smoking, they are compounding their physical problems. One of the issues that arises for smokers is Parasthesia, a burning or prickling sensation that a person experiences on the feet, legs, arms, hands, and other parts of the body.

The problem for sufferers of chronic pain is that quitting smoking adds to their discomfort when they are dealing with the challenges of nicotine addiction withdrawal as well. Dr. Steven Yen has some great tips for anyone wanting to quit which he shares in Issue 9 of Health Naturally Magazine.

Whilst it is common knowledge that quitting smoking is beneficial to one’s health, it may not be as well known that the body does begin to heal very quickly. By adding a few important foods and supplements, this healing will happen even faster. When you quit smoking, in 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure will drop. In 4 hours the nicotine level in your blood will halve. In 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal and the oxygen level increases. In 1-2 days, nicotine by-products are removed from your blood. In 2-3 days, Taste buds revive, and your ability to taste and smell improves. In 2 – 12 weeks, your heart attack risk begins to […]

Macular Degeneration – Are you at risk of going blind?

yay-5190966Macular degeneration rates are soaring. Macular degeneration affects your vision and can send you blind and can devastate someone who is affected. The rates are increasing rapidly around the world and in countries like the USA and Australia there is a 10% chance in developing the age related macular degeneration. Recent studies are showing that it may have to do with the type of oil you consume in your diet. This includes margarine. Many of the processed foods we eat are rich in polyunsaturated vegetable oils. The oils that you eat become part of your eye. In issue 8  of Health Naturally Magazine we have a great article by Dr. Bruce Fife who outlines this problem and gives you ways to prevent macular degeneration.

Gallbladder Health

GallstonesHave problems losing weight? Got digestive issues or maybe some allergies? It is a sign that your liver is not functioning properly. Fatty Liver is something effecting millions of people today. Why? Because we are so hooked on processed foods that are refined and loaded with sweeteners and salt. I say sweeteners as there are a huge variety of them in our foods and if you live in the USA, a large majority of these sweeteners are derived from corn. These corn sweeteners are terrible for you but that is another story. We are also eating large quantities of the wrong fats in our diet. Today, I want to talk about your gallbladder. Many people have no idea where their gallbladder is or what its function is. Some doctors will try and tell you that you don’t really need it, particularly if it’s causing you difficulties, they will suggest that you have it removed.

The gallbladder is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as one of our most important organs. It is closely related to our liver function and is crucial in breaking down fats in our digestive system. Our liver produces bile at a slow and steady pace, delivering it to our gallbladder. Our gallbladder is used as a storage area for bile and when our bile is required, like after eating a meal with fat in it, our bile is released to assist in breaking down these fats. Over time, because of eating the wrong foods and drinks, our gallbladder will develop what are known as gallstones. These gallstones prevent the bile from filling up the gallbladder properly (because it’s full of gallstones). The gallbladder […]

Antibiotics in Animal feed on Conventional Farms in the USA

What are you really eating?

Did you know that 29 Million tons of anti-biotics is used in animal feed in the USA last year? Imagine the weight of 29 million cars! This is going into all conventional animal farms that produce meat, milk, cheese and eggs. Here is another reason to consider using organically produced goods. This is one of the reasons we are now faced with “super-bugs” – these bacteria that can resist most known anti-biotics. Microbes are now known to communicate with each-other and they alter themselves genetically to overcome the anti-biotics. This is another reason why it is so important to nourish yourselves daily with pro-biotics, to keep a good balance of friendly bacteria in your system. This boosts your immune system and helps you to resist and overcome infections.

  • Chicken meat industry is not what it was. Chicken meat industry is not what it was.

Chicken meat industry is not what it was.

yay-7992372Chicken not what it used to be…

Like to eat chicken? Well you may not know but today conventional farmers can raise birds in almost half the time and they are much larger. It used to take 70 days to raise a bird to “process” but now it is only 48 days. In fact they have been re-engineered to have larger breasts. So large that towards “harvest” time they are so heavy some of them can not stand up and some die at this time in their cooped up conditions.

Our food chain is getting a bit scary. – There is great merit in considering organic free range chicken. We will have more on this in the future, as it has changed so much in the last 50 years. This is faster than at any time in human evolution.
